We get told about a pool that won’t stay clear in spite of balanced chemistry more often than not. But then again, the chemical readings are not the whole story. We can put you through what is likely happening.

Balanced Chemistry Is No Guarantee of Clean Water

A lot of pool owners are under the impression that if the test strips check out, they are in the clear. Not so. Your water may still be at odds with you because there is more to clarity than alkalinity, pH and chlorine; you have to factor in filtration, circulation and any contaminants in hiding.

Some will follow the numbers and never see the bigger picture, adding to the problem with more chemicals when that is not the solution.

What is Making Your Pool Cloudy or Green

If the chemistry is sound and the water is not, it is typically down to something like:

• A pump not left to run long enough for proper circulation
• Fine particles getting by a filter that is past its prime
• Restricted flow from clogged return jets or skimmer baskets
• Algae making inroads quicker than the chlorine can handle
• Metals which are not uncommon in these parts of Central Florida and will put a tint on the water
• Cyanuric acid in excess, robbing your chlorine of its strength
• Debris that evades the usual cleaning

The long season, the rain, the humidity and heat of Central Florida are hard on a pool. Algae will take advantage of any opportunity. One summer thunderstorm is enough to put fresh water and organics in your pool and ruin your balance and clarity before the day is done.

It does a great deal of unheralded work. If the sand, DE or cartridge filter is not properly maintained, you will see it in the quality of your water. And not giving the pump enough hours a day is a frequent offender; in this heat the water has to turn over to remain clear.
