Add Water Features to Your Pool Design for Soothing Sounds and Sights

Adding a swimming pool is something many families dream about. Wanting to be able to swim at any time without having to travel to a community pool or the beach is a common desire. But many basic pools are just that: basic. They’re water-filled holes with concrete decking. That can leave pool owners a little dissatisfied.

If you want to add a pool, grab the opportunity to have some say in the design. That gives you a chance to turn your backyard into an amazing haven by adding water features. Instead of a concrete-lined hole with a diving board, your yard becomes a soothing sanctuary. Before you begin, though, you need to know more about what it takes to add water features to a pool design.

What Counts as a Water Feature?

Water features are mainly decorative. Think fountains, streams, waterfalls and other features where the intent is to make the pool area look nice. The features can have a practical side, such as a waterfall that doubles as a water slide. However, if the main purpose is to improve appearance or atmosphere, then it qualifies as a “water feature.”

Jacuzzis and hot tubs really aren’t water features. Any decorative improvements they bring are secondary to their intended uses.

Add Before Construction If Possible

Adding water features to a new pool design before construction begins is the best course of action. This allows you to add the exact features you want. You’ll be able to modify the size of the pool if needed. It also allows you to take care of all the necessary permits in one application.

The downside is that there can be pressure to construct the “perfect” pool that has everything. That becomes very expensive if you find the land you’re building on requires extensive structural reinforcement. All those features could send the cost of the pool soaring, too. Always set your budget before starting to plan, and determine which features are must-haves versus would-likes.

Or Schedule Installation Services When You Already Have a Pool

If you already have a pool, you can add water features. However, what you can add depends on what you already have. The cost of the renovation is also a factor.

Let’s say you wanted to add a small fountain next to the pool with a self-contained piping system. The fountain would mostly reuse water. Connecting it to the plumbing system would take only a couple of new connections. This addition may be manageable as long as there’s enough room.

Now let’s say you wanted that fountain to be at the edge of the existing pool structure. You want it to replace part of the border and send a cascade of water into the pool itself. The underground plumbing connections would require extensive work. All those modifications could easily destroy your budget.
